I have just sent out my first ‘One Off’ for paid subscribers ( Flags of Convenience) about the original pride flag, the (awful) progress pride flag, the need for planning permission for some flags and my preference for the suffragette flag. I think ‘One Offs’ will be a bit sporadic since I am mainly taken up with these updates but, if you want to receive them, please become a paid subscriber for the price of a cup of coffee a month 😄
As we move into 2025 I am featuring, to start with, and in alphabetical order, those Readers’ Choices for best film ever that did not make the top seven ( see Update 500 for the top seven).
Next up is Planet of the Apes (1968).
What do you mean you don’t know the plot!!?? Astronauts Taylor, Landon and Dodge awaken from deep hibernation after a near-light-speed space voyage. Their spacecraft crashes into a lake on an unknown planet; Taylor's estimate places them 300 light-years from their home Solar System ( to give you some concept of this, that is about the distance between Owen Jones and reality 😂). Before they abandon their sinking vessel, Taylor (the mission commander) reads the ship's chronometer as November 25, 3978 – two thousand and six years after their departure in 1972. They discover that the planet they are on is ruled by apes who can speak and there are also mute and primitive human beings.
Charlton Heston is George Taylor, Linda Harrison is Nova. I can never work out one ape from another but Kim Hunter is Dr Zira. I can recognise her due to the enormous quiff 😁 The scene below is one of the last ones. Taylor is just about to make a devastating discovery! Apes know that sex is immutable! OK, the discovery actually is….

UK - Clinical Trials
I have reported on more than one occasion on why there can be absolutely no justification for a clinical trial of puberty blockers on children. For example here:
https://dustymasterson.substack.com/p/get-carter-part-2?utm_source=publication-search
Transgender Trend deal with this issue in detail on their substack.
Was a puberty blockers trial ever ethical?
March 4, 2025
After a detailed examination, they conclude:
No, it wasn’t ethical to experiment on children’s healthy bodies the first time round and it is certainly not ethical to do it again. The main reason the Tavistock GIDS [ Gender Identity Development Service] embarked on the first trial was not to follow normal medical standards of research, but as a response to pressure by ideological groups like Mermaids. Questions remain about the way they gained ethical approval, despite being cleared by the HRA [ the Health Research Authority] , and this does not give us confidence in the ethical review process now. Given what we know now compared to what was known then, there is no justification to conduct this experiment again.
Last November we were co-signatories of a letter to the Health Secretary, authored by Carrie Clarke, Director of Genspect UK, expressing our concerns, which was covered in the Telegraph. We wrote to him again this week, following the revelation that the NHS has not obtained the data necessary to complete the Cass Review’s data linkage study. Our letter can be seen here.
As we commented for this article in the Telegraph:
‘Puberty is an essential growth stage for a child to go through to reach adulthood. The sex hormones released at puberty are vital for healthy male or female development.
‘It is unethical to experiment on children’s bodies in order to find out how serious and long-lasting those harms will be. A child cannot weigh the risks of an interrupted puberty which may impact their fertility, sexual function and brain and bone development. It is unclear what the purpose of the treatment is or what such a trial would achieve.’
We are fully behind Keira Bell and James Esses in taking legal action if the HRA does not call off the trial.

England and Wales - He’s A Man!!
The piece below reminds me of the Kellie-Jay video of her shouting out ‘He’s A Man!’ at a swimming event where Lia Thomas had just won a race. So here it is 😁
Barrister Sarah Phillimore writes on her substack about a larping man who has made a (ridiculous) complaint about her to the Bar Standards Board ( for England and Wales) and the amount of time the BSB are taking to resolve this complaint.
A man's a man for a'that
Am I bringing my profession into disrepute for calling a man, a man? TLDR: I don't think so.
Mar 05, 2025
Sophie Weddell is a man who says he is a woman and goes by the name of ‘Sophie Sparkles’ or ‘Sophie Molly’. He’s quite active on social media and how he manifests his womanhood includes posting pictures of himself with clothes pegs on his nipples, a ball gag in his mouth, his head tilted back in apparent sexual pleasure.
I find this portrayal of womanhood offensive and repulsive. But guess what? I have to put on my big girl pants and deal with it. Sophie is allowed to be offensive and repulsive. I don’t think this should be a crime. I can always look away. He isn’t emailing me the pictures directly or standing outside my house at 4am screaming at me to come and look.
Sophie finds some behaviour of mine offensive, in particular the manifestation of my protected belief that sex is real, it matters and it is immutable. But he adopts a rather less pragmatic approach and makes direct complaints to my regulator about me.
The offensive manifestation of my protected belief were the following words on the social media platform X in 2024 when I commented on Sophie’s topless photo
‘this man is not a woman. I am allowed to say this’

Ireland - Women’s Gaelic Football
Maria Maynes in Gript News ( Meath County Council rejects motion calling for LGFA to reverse transgender policy 03 March) reports:
Meath County Council have rejected a motion calling on the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) to “reverse its transgender policy, for the sake of the safety of their membership and the sake of fairness on the football field.”
Aontú councillor Emer Tóibín, who put forward the motion, said that 25 of Meath County Council’s 40 elected members were present to vote, with 15 voting against, 9 voting in favour and one abstention.
Cllr Tóibín, an elected councillor for Navan, told Gript that she was “very disappointed” at the vote, and the number of elected representatives who actually showed up to vote. She said that all Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael councillors present voted against the motion, while all Sinn Féin councillors present supported the motion.
The councillor said that many people were unaware that the policy had been adopted by the LGFA in 2023, as she raised the question, “Are female players insured in case of injury by male-born Gaelic players?”
Reacting to the vote, Cllr Tóibín said: “In other words, they support trans-identifying males from the age of 13 playing against young girls and women on the football pitch,” Cllr Tóibín said of those in opposition to the motion, adding:
“On an issue as serious as fairness and safety in women’s sport, it’s disappointing but not surprising that all of the Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael councillors at the meeting were unwilling to take a stand, even when common sense and safeguarding are at stake.
“They towed the party line despite many of their own daughters, nieces, neighbours and friends being completely in opposition to this policy which was endorsed primarily in secrecy by the LGFA in February 2023.”
In late February 2023, new rules were enacted by the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) meaning that players who transitioned, or are transitioning, from male to female, are now allowed to play in ladies gaelic football. The LGFA’s policy allows both transgender adults and children to play the sport. Children aged between 12 and 15 will be allowed to play if they secure approval from a new Transgender Application Committee.
As per the rules set out in the policy, child players have to submit confirmation from a qualified medical practitioner – such as their GP – that they have or are transitioning from male to female and intend to “live their life as female.”
The change in policy sparked opposition, including from Tipperary Senior Ladies Gaelic Football manager Peter Creedon who told Gript that he felt the LGFA’s decision to allow male-born players into the sport was unfair and could have negative consequences.
Parents, referees and parents have spoken out against the policy. Last July, discussion around the policy was reignited when a network of players, coaches, volunteers and parents involved in Gaelic Games associations vowed to contact the Minister for Social Protection to raise concerns about the policy of allowing “male players” from age 12 compete in the female category, after the Minister said she would rule out changing the law to allow under-16s legally change gender.
The Gaels for Fair Play group said it believed that “the transgender policy of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) breaches equality legislation (North and South) that upholds the right of females to single sex sport. Inclusion of males in the female category is harmful to women and girls and is, therefore, exclusionary and discriminatory”.
‘A GROSS FAILURE OF THE LGFA’S DUTY OF CARE’
Speaking prior to the vote, Cllr Emer Tóibín said that the LGFA had endorsed transgender participation in female football “unilaterally, and without a word to club chairs, coaches, volunteers and players.”
She claimed that the organisation “have since offered no insight into the logic, science or best-practice behind their ruling.” The councillor also spoke on her experience as a mother of four sports-loving children who have represented their county in hurling and football, adding that her female daughter “could not and would not match her brother, in terms of power, strength, speed and stamina, on the hurling or football pitch, despite her very best efforts.”

Free Speech
Following on from his excellent interview on Free Speech Nation featured in my last update, Andrew Doyle on his substack predicts that this is going to become a battle between America and Europe.
The next phase of the culture war
Prepare for America versus Europe...
Mar 04, 2025
New battle lines are forming in the culture war. While the woke movement appears to be in retreat, the forces of authoritarianism are regrouping for a fresh assault. Rather than maintaining a straightforward conflict between right and left, the next phase of the culture war will most probably be waged between Europe and the United States. It has all the qualities of a novel by Henry James for the digital age, with the distinctions between the old world and the new brought once again into sharp focus.
Free speech will be the key issue. Most of us will have seen the footage of vice-president J. D. Vance last week in the Oval Office taking Keir Starmer to task for the ‘infringements on free speech that actually affect not just the British’ but also ‘American technology companies and by extension, American citizens’. Starmer pushed back, saying ‘in relation to free speech in the UK, I’m very proud of our history there’. It’s a bit like Hannibal Lecter boasting about his ongoing commitment to vegetarianism.

Talking Nonsense 101 - Who needs logic? You don’t! You’re trans! We’ll teach you some stock phrases that will leave everyone completely stumped! Things like “I just know”, “I don’t want to wait because then I would have to wait”, and “I think I’m a boy/girl/moose/snowman/stop sign/(whatever)”. We’ll teach you how to furrow your eyebrows and scream these statements with conviction so everyone will think you’re enlightened and thoughtful.
New Trans Vocabulary 102 - Learn the new meaning for old words like “identify”, “transition” and “queer” and some new ones like “cis”. If you see a man and his dog, we’ll teach you to say, “Good dog. Are you cis-male, trans-male, cis-female, or trans-female? Or maybe you identify as a trans cat?” We’ll teach you how “transition” can be used for any change where you want to hide the grisly details. You will practice saying, “Did your aging grandfather transition to the local graveyard? Did our neighbor transition to the unemployment line? A relative’s home transitioned to ashes.” You’ll love your new vocabulary!

The chart on the Sarah Phillimore piece is fascinating and makes me wonder ‘where are all these people? Isn’t it time they said something?’
Well done Iowa. Are you listening Ireland? And the FA for that matter.
Beautiful Daphne. My hellebores have burst into life and we’ve got a bank of snowdrops beside the house. At last!
#PlantsDontHaveGenderIdentities
The ending of Planet of the Apes is quite prescient - as anyone who watches British detective shows knows, aged corpse's sex identified by our different pelvises (giving/receiving) so archeologists will have no idea which men chose to live as women. But then why would they care? Anthropologists, perhaps.
