It tells the story of Elliott, a boy who befriends an extraterrestrial he names E.T. who has been stranded on Earth. Along with his friends and family, Elliott must find a way to help E.T. find his way home.

Scotland - Sandie Peggie

As readers know, Sandie’s tribunal case resumed on Wednesday.

The trials of Sandie Peggie are a parable of where power lies in a country when lies are power. Peggie is a nurse from Fife, by all accounts a hard-working professional dedicated to her vocation and her patients. Things went awry, however, when she objected to undressing in a changing room in front of Dr Beth Upton, a male medic who identifies as a woman. If that sentence sounds absurd, that’s because it is, but we are supposed to pretend otherwise – especially if we want to be considered good people. Dishonesty is the best policy.

Following a complaint from Dr Upton, Peggie was suspended by NHS Fife in January 2024, and she took the health board and Dr Upton to an employment tribunal. NHS Fife petitioned for the tribunal to sit in private and Dr Upton asked that his identity be anonymised, but both requests were denied. Earlier this month, NHS bosses finally disclosed their legal bill so far – £220,465 – at the instruction of the Scottish information commissioner. On Wednesday, an internal NHS Fife inquiry cleared Peggie of misconduct, failures in patient care and misgendering Dr Upton – but the tribunal continues.

Every time a health board witness gives evidence in the proceedings, it becomes less of a mystery why NHS Fife wanted the tribunal to sit in secret. It has revealed itself to be an inept organisation, led by a hapless hierarchy, implementing guidelines that are in a very distant relationship with equalities law. If the health board had simply shredded the Equality Act and glued the pieces back together at random, it would have made for a more coherent policy than the one put in place.

This is what happens when you submit to an unfalsifiable ideology that is so patently false. A few basic questions would have saved NHS Fife, to say nothing of Sandie Peggie, all this grief, but genderism is an unforgiving religion and heresy is punished severely. When the employment tribunal concludes, the health board will have to confront some hard truths about how it got here, and so will the rest of Scotland. While NHS Fife deserves no sympathy after all it has put Peggie through, it is far from the only institution of the Scottish state to have been annexed by the gender identity movement.

Gender ideology was able to spread so far, so deep and so fast thanks to the structural vulnerabilities in Scottish democracy. These include an ideologically narrow and intellectually shallow political class; a parliament ill-designed for scrutiny and chronically incapable of attracting parliamentarians equal to the task; an over-mighty executive wedded to secrecy, allergic to transparency, and contemptuous of accountability; and a civil society, including charities, academics and journalists, more aligned than is healthy with the political aims of the Scottish government.

It is no surprise that this environment was so conducive to the democratic sub-contracting that sees government fund third-sector activists to lobby for policies endorsed by academic activists, drafted by civil service activists, to be implemented by public sector activists. An entire ecosystem of policymaking that never once comes into contact with public opinion. These activists represent what Lord Glasman calls ‘the lanyard class’, a concept developed by Janice Turner, and which broadly describes the dreary wokescolds who have marched through the institutions with ‘be kind…’ on their lips and ‘…or else’ in their eyes.

Stephen Daisley concludes:

‘Woke’ is going nowhere until it is purged from the institutions it has captured or those institutions are dissolved and rebuilt. It is not enough for opponents of progressive ideology to win power and pursue a different policy direction. They must first win the fight to restore substantive democracy and that means dismantling the regime squatting on top of it. Sandie Peggie has been put through hell but something good might come of her ordeal if it accelerates regime change. It’s time to overthrow the lanyardocracy.

The nurse at the centre of an employment tribunal over a trans doctor’s use of a female changing room is now suing her trade union, claiming it failed to support her because of her gender-critical beliefs.

Sandie Peggie, who has been a fully paid-up member of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) for 30 years, says the union effectively abandoned her when she first approached them for help and advice after being suspended by NHS Fife in 2024.

The article continues:

The Herald understands Ms Peggie, who worked in A&E at Kirkcaldy’s Victoria Hospital, claims her union turned its back on her because it “had adopted gender identity belief as its institutional belief, and was therefore unwilling or unable to recognise that she was or might be entitled to insist on the maintenance of the female changing room as a single-sex space”.

She also claims the union failed to acknowledge her belief that she was experiencing discrimination and harassment from NHS Fife and Dr Upton.

Ms Peggie’s lawyer, Margaret Gribbon of McGrade Employment Solicitors in Glasgow, said last night: “The RCN’s failure to act like a trade union ought to, has contributed to Sandie Peggie’s mistreatment.

"They have repeatedly failed to exercise their industrial muscle to advocate for female members distressed because they are being deprived of genuine single-sex spaces to dress and undress at work.

“Had the RCN fulfilled the conventional role of a trade union, it is less likely that Sandie would have faced the ordeal of an 18-month disciplinary process and having to raise legal proceedings against Fife Health Board.”

“My body, my choice” is a powerful slogan. It asserts the right of patients to make decisions about their bodies without interference from clinicians. But in the context of gender medicine, this principle is being dangerously misapplied. It’s yet another mistruth being sold to vulnerable people, and one that distorts the meaning of autonomy in healthcare and undermines patient safety.

In the debate around gender medicine, the concept of bodily autonomy now dominates activist and legal campaigns. Groups like the Good Law Project and TransActual UK argue that denying puberty blockers, hormones, or surgeries — especially to under-18s — is a violation of the most fundamental human right: the right to control your own body.

But this argument is both legally and clinically flawed. It is being used to justify irreversible interventions on young people that would never be accepted in any other area of medicine. This blog explores why that’s not only incorrect but deeply dangerous, for patients, clinicians, and the long-term integrity of the NHS.

What bodily autonomy really means in UK law

Bodily autonomy is the principle that individuals have the right to make decisions about their own bodies. But in UK medical law, this does not mean a patient has the right to demand treatment. The courts have been very clear: bodily autonomy is a negative right. It protects your ability to refuse medical intervention but not to insist on it.

England - Manchester City Council

I did report this recently but it’s worth a repeat to link to the piece by EDI Jester.

JJ Starky in The Stark Naked Brief ( The Labour Leader at the Centre of Yet Another Grooming Gang Data Scandal 11 July) writes:

Bev Craig became leader of Manchester City Council in December 2021, making history as the city’s first female and ‘LGBT’ council leader.

Before that, she served as executive member for adult services, health, wellbeing and inclusion, was deputy chair of Manchester Health and Care Commissioning, and co-chair of the Manchester Local Care Organisation.

Upon taking office, Craig gave a bold interview to The Guardian, vowing to put the safety of women and girls at the centre of her administration. She criticised urban planning as too “male-led,” arguing it had created public spaces that “do not feel safe” for others.

Two years later, in a separate interview with I Love Manchester, she reaffirmed that “women’s rights, anti-racism, and LGBT rights movements” were central to her political work.

But last week, those priorities faced renewed scrutiny.

A damning report by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) revealed that Manchester City Council had failed to share critical data with police investigating grooming gangs.

The obstruction caused “significant delays”—in some cases even undermining evidence preparation for court.

Ireland - Women’s Sport

Might the recent Supreme Court judgment be influential in Ireland? Well it seems that the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) have nothing but contempt for the For Women Scotland judgment!

Any guesses!?

Gript News ( I am watching the GAA surrender to Trans activism 18 July) reports:

“The Gaelic Athletic Association formally endorses the distribution of puberty blockers to children”

That is something the organisation would most likely deny formally, but it is nevertheless the most logical conclusion to be drawn from its likely representation at this Saturday’s ‘Belfast Pride’ parade.

It’s likely because national and provincial GAA officials and employees have taken part in the Dublin and Belfast marches since the early 2020s. There has been no public indication of a change for 2025.

‘Stand By Your Trans’ was the slogan of the Belfast event in 2024, and the GAA’s Ulster Council and Antrim County Board sent delegations to it, suited and booted in multi-coloured jerseys and festooned with flags, all the better to stand strong by their trans and so on.

‘NO GOING BACK’ – A PROTEST FOR PUBERTY BLOCKERS

Belfast’s event this Saturday is even more politically contentious, however. Indeed it’s arguably the most politically infused ‘Pride’ parade on this island to date. It’s entitled, ‘No Going Back’.

This is not a protest against the new 3-up, 3-down rule in Gaelic football, which limits forwards from crossing halfway to help their back line. No, it’s a strident reaction against the ruling of the UK Supreme Court in April that the definition of a woman is based on biological sex, and the decision to ban the use of puberty blockers for children north of the border (as in Great Britain).

Call me old-fashioned, but I’d wager that a survey of members of the GAA, Camogie Association and (actual) Ladies’ Gaelic Football Association would find a majority agreeing that a natural-born male should not use a female changing room or play on a women’s team just because he / she wants to, and that juveniles should not be given drugs that would permanently prevent their maturation to adulthood. Let’s pause the clock on these thoughts for a moment though.

Belfast’s proud gender warriors have taken their truculence to new depths. They have ruled that all political parties who voted for the ban on puberty blockers cannot be represented as such at this year’s event, to the ire of Sinn Féin and Alliance apparatchiks who fixate on being on the right side of the virtue-signal but are now prohibited from painting pink party logos on their cheeks for the city promenade.

Hence every corporate body parading behind the ‘No Going Back’ banner this Saturday is presumed to be explicitly or implicitly in favour of biological males powdering noses in the ladies’ loo, dressing next to girls, and throwing their testosterone-fuelled frames into sporting combat with the fairer sex – in spite of court rulings and large political majorities on these issues. Media questions about whether the civil service’s representation in such an overtly political protest has led to a fudged compromise whereby its Head (Jayne Brady) will be absent but departmental branches will brandish their paraphernalia, lest they be accused of being something-phobic.

The Pride promoters have already counted the GAA as standing foursquare behind trans demands. How do we know this? Since 2023, they have debarred Ulster Rugby from their Belfast parades, after the IRFU decided not to allow biological males to play in female contact rugby games. The absence of any such ruling on the part of the Gaelic association is taken as endorsement.

GAA President Jarlath Burns joins a “pre-pride” event

Gript has previously covered the disquiet among LGFA members about their organisation’s policy of allowing biological males to play against females. This matter arose when a Dublin ladies’ junior shield final in 2022, in which the referee stopped play to inform Na Gaeil Aeracha (‘the Gay Gaels’) of a problem with number 21 – ‘the player is a man’ – and the pictorial evidence afterwards proved the latter’s physical advantage over girl opponents.

The LGFA hierarchy’s response, in February 2023, was to covertly introduce a Transgender Policy permitting any male over-12 to play in female games if they could provide supporting paperwork. CEO Helen O’Rourke circulated this policy to county boards with the proviso that it was ‘NOT for circulation to clubs or members, as they must first be discussed and approved by Central Council’. No clubs were allowed to debate the matter or discuss their concerns; not even the parents of young girls who might be directly affected. Attempts by numerous members around the country to raise the question were effectively stifled or neutered. An umbrella group called ‘Gaels for Fair Play’, advocating for female-only games, has been all but ignored by the MSM too. So while the IRFU and numerous sporting organisations in Ireland and Britain have gone one way, the LGFA, and by extension the GAA with which it is planning to integrate, has gone the complete other.

This has been the general pattern of things in recent years. Those at the helm of the GAA, LGFA and Camogie Association have doubled down on all gender matters – which are suddenly many – to mimic the hyper-‘inclusive’ policies of the political elites and commercial stakeholders, to heck with the cultural ethos of the association or anything else. The Gaelic sports bodies, subjected to intense tackling on four sides – government, NGO agendas, sponsors and the inter-county players’ union – have figuratively spilt the ball and lost possession.

New Zealand - Flying The Suffragette Flag

For those who are thinking right now “wait – hasn’t NZ First submitted a member’s bill to ban all flags except the official flag of New Zealand from being displayed on government buildings?” you’d be right. But I’m cracking on with this petition to fly the Women’s Suffrage flag at Parliament. Let me explain why, and then if you agree, please do sign it in the link at the bottom. Anyone, anywhere – either in NZ or overseas – can sign.

First of all, who knows when the member’s bill to ban non-NZ flags on government buildings will be drawn from Parliament’s lucky dip biscuit tin, or if it will pass when the House votes on it. Even if the bill is drawn in the not-too-distant future, and passes the vote in the House, a petition to fly the Women’s Suffrage flag will show there’s an appetite for it to be displayed somewhere in some way on the 19^th September each year.

Because that’s the day in 1893 when New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world to legislate women’s right to vote. A flag fluttering in acknowledgement of that somewhere doesn’t seem like too big an ask. Winning that right was hard fought for, and took three strenuous attempts amongst a lot of opposition from both men and women before the bill passed by a mere “two hurrahs”, as the congratulatory telegram to Kate Sheppard said.

Technically, New Zealand’s Suffragists - we didn’t have the more combative Suffragettes here - didn’t have a flag. The white camellia, which the Suffragists gave to their supporters in Parliament to wear during the passing of the Electoral Act 1893, has become symbolic of the victory. However, the purple/violet, white, and green striped women’s suffrage flag from the UK has since been adopted and widely recognised here, and elsewhere, as symbolic of both the struggle and the victory.

In the event that the bill to ban all non-NZ flags from government buildings doesn’t get passed in the House, then we remain subjected to seeing the Trans, Rainbow, Pride/Progress, Bisexual, and Intersex flags being flown at Parliament at various intervals on multiple days each year. These flags are not being flown in recognition of anything notable, but just because the powers-that-be have been persuaded by highly influential TQ+ lobby groups that we the public need to have them in our faces, compliments of our Parliament building.

This Never Happens

EXCLUSIVE DETAILS: Trans-Identified Male Killer Sues Ohio Department of Corrections Officials Seeking Transfer to Women’s Prison (18 July)

A trans-identified male currently serving a sentence of 15 years to life for murder has filed a lawsuit against the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections (ODRC) seeking a transfer to a female prison. Ricardo Janel Taborn claims to have amputated his testicles while incarcerated in a correctional institution for men, and is now legally recognized as a “female” named Riicara Janel Dior.

According to the complaint, filed against the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections (ODRC), Taborn has been incarcerated since 1991, and was found guilty in 1992 of murder. Taborn was handed a sentence of 15 years to life for the crime, and he has been detained in correctional facilities for men since that time.

Taborn alleges that he began taking feminizing hormones in 2020 after acquiring a diagnosis of “gender dysphoria,” presumably from medical professionals employed by the ODRC.

On July 7, Taborn was sympathetically profiled by Ideastream Public Media.

“I’m a woman. I’m real demure, ladylike. I’m a girl’s girl, so I want to be acknowledged as that,” Taborn told Ideastream. “There’s no way possible you can keep a woman safe in a man’s prison. That’s just not even logical.”

Curiously, in another report filed by Taborn that year, he demonstrates knowledge of a male inmate who was transferred to a woman’s prison in Ohio. The inmate, Michael Cole, had previously been held at AOCI during a period when Taborn was also detained there.

As previously reported by Reduxx, convicted killer Michael Cole successfully petitioned for transfer to a female facility in Ohio some time between 2018 and 2020.

Cole, who adopted the feminine name Michelle, was convicted for the 2016 murder of another trans-identified male Cole had met through a “transgender support group” on Facebook. The victim’s body was found dumped in the driveway of a residence in Cleveland’s east side, and was described as “wearing only underwear and had white plastic bags covering [his] head and both hands,” according to police reports.

Cole was later accused of sexually assaulting a female inmate while housed in women’s pre-trial detention, but he was later cleared of any wrongdoing.

After the allegations that Cole had raped a female detainee while in a Hamilton County jail, he was relocated to the Ohio Reformatory for Women (ORW), another female facility.

Our coalition of independent feminist organisations has submitted its shadow report to the United Nations Human Rights Council as part of Australia’s fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

Legal reforms in Australia have left women in a state of deep uncertainty about our rights. The law’s failure to clarify the definition of ‘woman’ (thanks to the widespread adoption of sex self-identification) has created confusion and forced women to bear the cost of litigation merely to test the boundaries of our rights in practice.

Legal ambiguity is undermining essential spaces and services for women, especially those escaping violence or seeking trauma support. The erosion of clear data collection by sex further hampers our ability to address male violence or develop evidence-based policy. We are calling for urgent government action to reinstate sex-disaggregated data and to safeguard special measures intended to benefit women, as clearly mandated by international law.

Montgomery Toms

Interesting interview by Andrew Gold with 20 year old political campaigner, Montgomery Toms. Montgomery attended a recent Pride march in London ( not sure if it was the same one Mr Menno attended https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kba2knSteYk&t=3s ) with a sign that had the ‘trans flag’ followed by ‘= Mental Illness’. Perfectly legitimate free speech one would think but within 20 minutes he was arrested, then held for 9 hours in custody and is now banned from entering the Westminster area!!!

By the way, until recently, ‘gender dysphoria’ was classified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual as a mental health issue. I would prefer to see ‘gender dysphoria’ as a symptom ( see Dr Miriam Grossman) and then there are adult males with the fetish of autogynephilia. So Montgomery’s statement is a perfectly legitimate statement, of course.

Award and history

Louis I, Duke of Orleans declared himself Grand Master of the Order and conferred membership on the lords of his court, with the aim of linking their faithfulness to his person. The knights' number was set to twenty-five, Sovereign Chief included.

Louis I, Duke of Orléans probably chose the porcupine as symbol to show to the Duke of Burgundy that he would revenge of his braving him, as the porcupine points his quills to its enemies.

So let’s revive the great Order of the Porcupine.

Thanks to an excellent suggestion from Tenaciously Terfin, we are pausing Endpieces for the time being and giving Tenaciously and Liz a well earned rest from their hard work. So welcome to Terf Island Discs. Please let us have four of your favourite songs or pieces of music and provide a link if possible. They need to be reasonably short. We can’t expect to have readers listening to the whole of Tchaikovsky's piano concerto in B flat minor, albeit it is magnificent. Obviously, the choices don’t actually have to be from Terf Island - anywhere in the world! We will feature one piece of music in each general update.
