WELCOME TO UPDATE 500 🎉🥳
This substack has now been going for nearly two years and thanks to all those who have supported it, liked and commented and especial thanks to those who have made a paid subscription or have donated via buy me a coffee. This takes a lot of work ( sorry, trumpet blowing!) so I do greatly appreciate any financial assistance now that I am a Twirly. You don’t know what a Twirly is? See further below.
Anyway all we are doing in this update is celebrating 500 editions ( blimey, even I am impressed when I write that!) so over to Northern Soul Girl for the dancing and Pharrell Willams singing ‘Happy’. The old bloke who joins in later on would, I am afraid to say it, definitely be me 😂
Thanks to all those who sent in nominations for their best films of all time - a difficult job. I wrote a list, then had another think, then re-wrote it etc. Some of the films I had never even heard of. Sky West and Crooked? A Song Is Born? Life Is Beautiful?
Anyway, here are the top seven ( and the rest of the nominations will be featured as we start to go through the year) but before we get there a Twirly is, in the UK, an Old Age Pensioner deriving from their habit of trying to get on the bus with his or her free travel pass at 9.25am ( five minutes before the start of ‘off peak’) saying, with an innocent expression on his or her face (it’s usually old ladies to be honest 😂): ‘Am I too early?”
NUMBER ONE
Clearly in the lead! Vichy France has occupied Morocco. Rick runs Rick’s Bar and unexpectedly meets the old love of his life. It’s Casablanca.
NUMBER TWO
In an honourable second place, some of the smallest and furriest heroes in cinematic history. It’s Lord of the Rings.
NUMBER THREE
How can we cope with all this rain? Sing and dance? It’s Singing in the Rain.
NUMBER FOUR
One of those rare occasions when the sequel is better than the predecessor. It’s Godfather Part 2.
NUMBER FIVE
Death Row and a true gentle giant. It’s The Green Mile.
NUMBER SIX
Thanks to one reader who also voted for this one - I had it on my list. How far would you go if your daughter had been raped and murdered and the police department were letting you down? It’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
NUMBER SEVEN
Last but not least, how can you escape the mob? How about cross dressing and joining a girl band? It’s Some Like It Hot.

Dusty: Ok, now we move on to Terf News…
My assistant: Shut up, Dusty, we are just having a celebration today.
Umm, ok.
Good.
What are you doing now?
Ssh, I’m meditating.
But you’re just looking at the wall!?
Shut up, I’m meditating!

500 updates in two years is impressive! I know a little about the amount of work it takes, as I’m still working on doing a roundup of 2024 from just my own blogs, and it’s gruelling. Of course, I should start it sooner, which would make it less of an onerous job of it - maybe this year - lol!
Nice dance moves 😀
It’s a great variety of films for the top 7 places, Dusty. Glad to see musical & comedy as well as drama. I haven’t seen ‘Lord of the Rings’ or ‘The Green Mile’ but love ‘Casablanca’ & ‘Some Like it Hot’. Thanks very much.
