I don’t think there’s such a thing as gender dysphoria- just symptoms which have underlying causes such as autism, abuse, emerging as gay, fear of growing up in a sexualised world for girls, etc and in the past we may have settled on a different word or probably none. Gender dysphoria is shorthand for mental health problems, it’s a kind of fashionable diagnosis which has caught on due to pressure from ideologues and social contagion. I do accept that people such as Stella O’Malley would disagree with me and I don’t claim to be an expert so I don’t want to be dogmatic and am open to other opinions.
I agree , there’s no such thing as gd , we have to take into account various social factors but …. those promoting it are all just fucking mental ….. that’s just my professional opinion as a non professional sane person !
I additionally think that the TRAs have an inbuilt need to get it seen as an innate condition, so you have to treat this standalone condition and never mind about all the other comorbidities which everyone knows about. However they didn't like it being seen as a standalone mental health condition because normally you would treat such a condition with therapy hence the new fashion for 'gender incongruence.' It's like 'I'm Napoleon' 'Oh no you've got Napoleonitis, get him a bicorne hat immediately!' An anorexic saying she is fat 'Yes you are you should starve yourself' etc etc
😀
With what other condition do you completely take the word of the patient?
You are firmly in Camp 1 with Andrew D and the Jester, Petal 😃
I really like a lot about Camp 1 but think you have to address the fact that the kid (for whatever reason; peer pressure, Transhausen Parents, social contagion) is saying s/he is born in the wrong body. What is the problem? Psychosis? Schizophrenia? Scared of being same sex attracted? etc etc
Dusty
NB With regard to parents, strictly speaking it should be Transhausen By Proxy 😀
Maybe I’m picking this up wrong , you can change the body you were born with ( to some extent ) but you can’t change sex ,no one is born in the wrong sex , we could all say we are born in the wrong body
I’d quite like to be a 6’2” swede called Inga , instead I’m a 5’10” Scottish redhead with a temper 😂
Hahha they do talk of born in the wrong body don't they ( what happened to the right body?) but they mean wrong sex. They are good at making up annoying words and phrases such as 'cis' or 'heteronormative' or misappropriating words that were once perfectly ordinary like 'inclusive' Grrrrrr
Exactly this. At best, it's a constellation of signs and symptoms that need proper psychotherapeutic intervention - and nothing else. The stupid "treatment" that started with Einar Wegener/Lili Elbe should be immediately consigned to the "Examples of medical stupidity" file, and adults who have been responsible for doing it to children need prosecuting.
I am surprised that neither is focussing on the harms that puberty blockers do, although I am sure that features somewhere; but to my mind it is the most important aspect.
That's a divergence I hadn't thought of prior to you mentioning. Examining my opinions (because I've run both arguments at various times), I think I'm somewhere between the two. I will state absolutely, in the absence of proper evidence to the contrary, that there is no such condition as "gender dysphoria", though there is a set of symptoms which lead some people to falsely believe or desire to be regarded as the opposite sex. There are also some people who consciously adopt elements of these symptoms to attain perceived benefits for themselves. They are all being treated wrongly, both medically and socially. (I'm going to think of a much tidier way to write that, I promise! 😂😂)
I think that puts you a bit more in the second camp though, as I say, both camps come to the same conclusion. I don't think that nowadays anyone on our side treats gender dysphoria as a standalone medical condition unless I have missed someone?
Dusty
NB Just commented on your excellent piece on your substack. I was surprised you hadn't had a long piece from a certain person yet 😀

Ok sane maybe pushing it a bit
I agree with you three 😀

Correct answer - this person is psychotic!
Dusty
As a reasonably sensible ( simple ) person
And I’m screaming not to put this in capitals , no sane person believes that you can change sex
No matter how many degrees you have , or how many letters you have after your name , you can’t change sex , it’s just not possible
But there is huge money to be made - from both sides !
O god I long for simpler times when I would go out dancing on a Friday night 💃

Psychotic is even quicker shorthand than gender dysphoria. Do you think we could get the tras to adopt it?
They would need a whole lot of support dogs!!! 😀
😂

Completely agree.

Hi Sarah
I think the second camp do spend some time discussing the harms more than the first camp.
