Flash Gordon
Update 737. Transphobic Facial Expression Special. #BeMorePorcupine.
Onwards with the Dusty, Nicola and Moodie Film Series. Please keep the suggestions for films coming in but please check the list first which I am updating as we go along. Please send suggestions in the comments here at this link:
Flash Gordon is a 1980 film directed by Mike Hodges. The film follows star football quarterback Flash Gordon (Sam J. Jones) and his allies Dale Arden (Melody Anderson) and Hans Zarkov (Topol) as they unite the warring factions of the planet Mongo against the oppression of Ming the Merciless (Max von Sydow), who is intent on destroying Earth.
To say that this film is camp is a serious understatement!!
Thanks to two wonderful readers for suggested pieces.
Some of the linked pieces below may be behind a paywall.
UK - The Supreme Court Judgment
Two pieces from the latest Sex Matters newsletter (07 November):
Last Saturday already feels like a long time ago! Fiona McAnena, Emma Moore and I went to the 199 Days Later rally in London. It was a national day of action with demos at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and the Senedd in Cardiff as well as Westminster.
Organised by a grassroots group of women (the picture above is theirs), it was a great set of events, bringing women (and some men) together around the country to tell the government to get a move on with implementing the Supreme Court judgment. Despite our frustration at government inaction, it was a joyful day. It was great to meet so many people and the speeches were inspiring. Venice Allan gave a barnstorming speech about the Hampstead Ladies Pond including our legal action.
Each event also attracted a rival counter-protest. Observer Police Oracle in London wrote that the activists there were intending to march too, but the Met Police ruled that “the pro-trans group had to stay within the grassed area”. They hurled abuse as usual, but the march continued and “rather resembled that of a good-natured women’s institute outing”.
And Emma Moore met Róisín Murphy!
The marches were a clear sign that women are not giving up or going away in the face of the government’s foot-dragging and inaction. Government departments and public bodies are saying they cannot take action because they are waiting for EHRC guidance, and now the Minister for Women and Equalities is saying she won’t lay the guidance before Parliament until an impact assessment has been done.
Meanwhile the law is the law.
Next week we will be in court to make this point. We are intervening in the Good Law Project v EHRC case, which is a challenge to the EHRC’s clear interim update about toilets. We have provided evidence all about toilets and why they matter, including evidence from physiotherapist Elaine Miller and Professor Michelle Shipworth as well as a selection from the many women who took part in our single-sex services survey in 2022.
What is the real cost to business of ignoring equality law?
Backbench MPs arguing that the government cannot possibly follow the Supreme Court judgment by just saying No to transactivist demands wrote to Peter Kyle, Secretary of State for Business and Trade, claiming widespread business concern about the draft guidance. We took a closer look at the “650 businesses” that signed the Stonewall-style letter and found it had gone from Disney to Mickey Mouse. Almost no big businesses had signed the letter. Instead it was a long list of freelance consultants, tattoo artists, LGBTQ+ trainers and Etsy store owners.
The British Boll***s Corporation
Immediately after the dossier revealing, amongst other things, the control of the BBC by their special larping men’s activists unit, Martine Croxall is given a ticking off including for a facial expression!! As reported by Feminist Legal Clinic:
Martine Croxall broke rules over ‘pregnant people’ facial expression, BBC says | BBC (07 November)
All entries on Feminist Legal Clinic’s News Digest Blog are extracts from news articles and other publications, with the source available at the link at the bottom. The content is not generated by Feminist Legal Clinic and does not necessarily reflect our views.
The BBC has upheld 20 impartiality complaints over the way presenter Martine Croxall altered a script she was reading live on the BBC News Channel, which referred to “pregnant people” earlier this year.
The presenter said: “Malcolm Mistry, who was involved in the research, says that the aged, pregnant people … women … and those with pre-existing health conditions need to take precautions.”
Dusty - I also understand that Mr Mistry had originally used the word ‘woman’ himself but this was altered by the BBC!! What’s that sound? Oh, it’s George Orwell spinning in his grave!
The ECU said Croxall’s facial expression after she said “pregnant people” had been “variously interpreted by complainants as showing disgust, ridicule, contempt or exasperation.”
It added that “congratulatory messages Ms Croxall later received on social media, together with the critical views expressed in the complaints to the BBC and elsewhere, tended to confirm that the impression of her having expressed a personal view was widely shared across the spectrum of opinion on the issue”.
Harry Potter author JK Rowling was among those who praised Croxall at the time.

GB News interview Cathy Larkman of the Women’s Rights Network:
SEEN In Journalism report on their substack:
The BBC - what next
Yesterday’s Telegraph story confirms the worst - systemic bias favouring pro-trans narratives over a decade. Change is happening, but is it fast enough?
Nov 06, 2025
Does the BBC want to be saved from itself? Because we at Seen in Journalism have been trying - as have hundreds if not thousands of you. The BBC has been offered the simplest, most defensible solutions to the problem that exploded all over the Telegraph and Ofcom yesterday - its obsession with the counter-factual, harmful and activist nonsense of gender identity theory.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gift/98dfaa106022a7ba
From inside and outside it’s been urged to revert to the original principles of decent journalism. Establish the facts, tell the truth, and curate a range of views around them. For years these voices have been begging for change.
Ever since the BBC’s James Purnell, leading an entirely unnecessary LGBT progression review in 2018, declared that ‘an organisation that appears to have a heteronormative culture is not going to cut ice with 18-24 year olds’ - we’ve been trying.
(Ludicrous and negligent man. We remember him staring vacantly off screen during a so-called ‘listening session’ on his BBC pronoun edict, every employee encouraged to breach impartiality rules by submitting fealty to belief in gender allyship. Did he care? Of course not. He left, and didn’t take pronouns with him. You’re all stuck with ‘BBC she/hers’ for ever.)
But in 2025 we still have, as the Telegraph revealed, a content and editorial culture which can’t even acknowledge that there’s zero proof that gender identity exists. And no one will admit it’s ‘spurious and offensive’ to suggest that men are women. Staff are reprimanded in fact for stating the opposite, that they’re not. Pages bulge with trans sympathetic content. Only this week BBC Suffolk ran a five-minute promo feature for a charity that transitions children. (The presenters are helping to raise money for the charity funding it.) At the same time, BBC Politics was ignoring the fact that that EHRC guidance on the Supreme Court judgment is being delayed for likely a year. Just - not bothering to even glance at the story.
The bias isn’t a historical problem. It’s happening now.
The Telegraph expose reveals that a file detailing the BBC’s many failings on coverage of sex and gender landed in June, after months of collating evidence. By then it was at least six weeks since the Supreme Court judgement and still nothing had been done by the BBC to change its use of ‘preferred pronouns’ (which are still in place).

Cath Leng interviews community-media pioneer Rob Watson, founder of Decentered Media about the capture of the media regulators. I was a bit surprised to hear that Mr Watson is still a member of the Labour Party!! I am sure that the Labour Government are delighted that the media regulators are captured!!
UK - Education
Stuart Waiton of the Scottish Union for Education reports on the Academy of Ideas substack on an upcoming conference discussing, amongst other things, the indoctrination of children.
Why Scottish education matters – even if you don’t live in Scotland
Labour’s new curriculum review has left many of us worried it will lead to dumbing down in England and Wales. Here, Stuart Waiton explains why we have much to learn from the disasters in Scotland.
Nov 06, 2025
As Scotland slides down the international league table of basic educational standards, and concerns mount about behaviour in schools and the social-justice activism of teachers, the Scottish Union for Education (SUE) has organised a conference ahead of next year’s Scottish Parliament election, Election 2026: Why Scottish Education Matters, on Saturday 15 November in central Glasgow to urge our politicians to put education back on the agenda.
……………..
Concerns about a new dogma in schools will also be addressed by the brilliant Marion Calder of For Women Scotland. Helped by LGBT Youth Scotland clubs in schools and the purported ‘anti-bullying’ charity Time for Inclusive Education, transgender ideology continues to be promoted in Scottish schools – despite the UK Supreme Court ruling clarifying the legal definition of ‘woman’ and the doubts cast by the findings of the Cass Review of gender identity services for children and young people. Parents whose children have been socially transitioned (‘transed’) by schools will be with us to discuss what is happening and what we can do to challenge an approach that denies biological reality and potentially harms children.

The States - California Drivers
Feminist Legal Clinic via Epoch Times reports:
California Drivers Sue Uber, Lyft Alleging Gender Discrimination | The Epoch Times (07 November)
Male drivers affiliated with ride-hailing companies Uber and Lyft filed lawsuits against the businesses in California, accusing them of enforcing gender discrimination through programs that allow women to opt for female drivers.
The class action complaint against Uber was filed on Nov. 3 at the Superior Court of the State of California for the County of San Francisco.
The lawsuit took issue with Uber’s “Women Preferences” set of features announced for the U.S. market in July.
Initially, the Women Preferences option was introduced in Saudi Arabia in 2019, which was “overwhelmingly positive,” the company said, adding that the option has since been expanded to 40 nations.
[Ed: Another example of sex discrimination laws being used to reduce women’s safety and opportunities rather than for their protection as originally intended.]

Terf Island Discs
Thanks to an excellent suggestion from Tenaciously Terfin, we have paused Endpieces for the time being and we are giving Tenaciously and Liz a well earned rest from their hard work. So, since 07 July, we have been running Terf Island Discs.
We have decided to extend that one last time and then return to Endpieces.
Before we detail the extension, Endpieces, as regular readers will know, consisted of comic pieces, animal videos, songs etc to provide a bit of relief after some of the horror stories we detail on this substack. Endpieces was run by Tenaciously Terfin, Liz Parker and myself and we are delighted to now have been joined by Becca Shambles and Petal. Please let us know if you want to join the Endpieces Club 😊
I have an Endpieces folder so Endpieces suggestions can be sent to me at any time from now even though Terf Island Discs will definitely be going into the new year 😊
Back to Terf Island Discs. Several readers have chosen up to 8 songs or pieces of music each and we are going through those one at a time in each update. We are going to continue it one further time before returning to Endpieces and you can now choose up to 10 songs or pieces of music each. They need to be reasonably short. We can’t expect to have readers listening to the whole of Holst’s The Planets, albeit it is magnificent.
They don’t have to be from Terf Island BTW - anywhere in the world 😊
So for those who have already chosen 8, please choose 2 more and, if you have not yet taken part, please choose 10!! And if you have chosen from 1 to 7 so far, please top that up to 10. If you repeat a song or piece of music that has already been chosen, I’ll let you know and you can choose another one.
Please let us have a link if you can.
Please send your choices to the comments section here:
